Night 15 Open Thread

It's fast, exciting and (these Olympics) dangerous. It's the 4 man bobsled.

Night 15 at the Olympic Games sees a pair of American stars in their last shots at Gold. Lindsey Vonn skis in the slalom and Apolo Ohno has the 500m and the relay.

And the 4 man bobsled finishes up its runs with the favorite Germans and World Champion Americans in good positions for medals.

Over on CNBC the women’s Gold medal curling match is taking place. Defending champion Sweden leads Canada 4-3 in the 7th.

After the curling match Slovakia faces Canada in men’s hockey, with the winner advancing to the Gold medal game to take on the United States.

See you in the comments.

7:05 – Well, USA Sled 1 just set a new track record.

7:10 – Germany is a fourth of a second behind.

7:14 – USA Sled 2 almost crashes, but somehow escapes that and now is just .4 seconds behind the leaders.

7:28 – Canada steals in the 9th end. They lead by 2 going into the 10th and final end.

7:44 – Cheryl Bernard had a chance to win gold, but couldn’t make the (relatively routine) shot. Sweden has an equally routine shot.

7:46 – Sweden comes up with 2 to tie it. Extra end.

8:00 – Apolo Ohno time.

8:14 – And Sweden miraculously wins the Gold in the 11th without the hammer. It is their 2nd Gold medal in a row.

8:33 – Both Katherine Reutter and Wang Meng advance in their quarterfinals

8:46 – That was a wild 500m semi. Olivier Jean makes a terrible mistake and allows Sung si-Bek into the finals.

8:50 – Lee ho-Sook falls and Apolo Ohno is into the finals of the 500m.

8:53 – 1-0 Canada

9:05 – 2-0 Canada. In speedskating, Katherine Reutter advanced to the 500m final. Big for her.

9:08 – End of 1 and it’s 2-0 Canada. They are outshooting Slovakia 10-4

9:25 – Apolo Ohno gets disqualified because Canadian skaters can’t stay on their feet. Fair enough.

9:32 – Zdeno Chara to the box. I believe it is 2 minutes for “being tall”

9:48 – Say what you want about Apolo Ohno, but he’s pretty damn candid. Love that guy.

10:02 – Wang Meng becomes the first woman to win 6 medals in short track. American Katherine Reutter wins the first American individual medal in short track in 16 years. Great race by her, but Wang Meng is just too good.

10:21 – United States gets the bronze in the relay, Canada with the gold.

10:25 – USA sled 2 crashed in their 2nd heat.

10:26 – Slovakia gets one back. 3-1 Canada

10:33 – Slovakia gets another one back. 3-2 Canada.

10:33 – In bobsled, USA sled 1 is into 1st with a new track record.

10:35 – Well if nothing else, this gives Canada a little doubt heading into Sunday’s game. Momentum from game to game is largely a farce, but it can’t hurt

10:42 – Slovakia had some really good chances to tie it, but Canada holds them off and will advance to play the United States in the Gold medal game.

10:57 – Alright that’s all for me for tonight folks. The main attraction on latenight tonight is snowboarding parallel giant slalom.

I remember the salt lake city games but I don’t remember there being this much tension over the gold medal game if canada makes it.

Right me too …note that even though at the time Canada had the Olympic jinx of not having won a gold medal in hockey in 50 years mind you, the US were quite the underdog and it was Canada’s to lose as I recall. Team Canada did not disappoint at all by beating Team USA 5-2 for the gold.

And so now we have a potential rematch squared for the biggest game for either program — EVAH!

I vote for the 1960 throwbacks again for Team USA too.

And heck just for this one game they should be allowed the option to play without helmets should it happen too, but the goalies can keep those badass modern masks and pads. 😀

Mrejr – You should have hung around for my curling victory. It was an epic comeback and I needed a witness.

The ever so rare double Shuster is in full effect.

Both Canadian goals off came off deflections, so that first period is great game film for the defense of Team USA.

The forward posting up in front of the net cannot be allowed to have free reign of his stick and has to be bodied around a lot I would think as a hockey novice.

Demitra hit the post at the end of regulation. My god did Canada play scared the last 5 minutes. They might as well have had sawdust coming out of their gloves. A lot of tight grips all around.

Team Canada can count their lucky stars after that gritty comeback effort by Slovakia.

If only Slovakia could play Switzerland instead of unworthy Finland for the bronze.

I’ll cheer for Slovakia tomorrow on that if they even bother to show it.
