Day 14 Open Thread

Cheryl Bernard and Canada go for a spot in the Gold medal match

Today from Vancouver, the men’s and women’s curling semis take center stage. Right now Canada is facing Switzerland in women’s, and right now as well China faces Sweden.

In mens, Canada faces Sweden and Norway faces Switzerland.

At 3/2, the women’s 5k cross country relay awards its medals, and the women’s bronze medal hockey game featuring Sweden and Finland also takes place.

But the event I will be glued to is tonight at 6/5, when Canada and the United States meet up in the women’s hockey Gold medal game.

Kind of a light day, but there’s still great stuff going on. See you in the comments.

12:03 – In end 5, Canada leads Switzerland 3-2, and in end 4 Sweden is up on World Champion China 3-1

12:10 – Sweden up 3-1 in the 5th now after a blank.

12:16 – I have stupid class to go to, but I’ll be back in a couple hours.

2:05 – And I’m back.

The big news today is that skiier Julia Mancuso shaved off .8 seconds off her deficit in her 2nd run of the giant slalom, which was the 3rd fastest run of the day. She had one of the fastest runs going yesterday, but because the organizers hastily pushed her on the course, she had to pull up after they couldn’t get Lindsey Vonn off the course fast enough. Canadian volunteers cost Julia Mancuso a medal, and possibly a Gold medal. Another black mark on one of the most poorly run games in recent history.

2:12 – Canada and Sweden will matchup for the Gold medal in women’s curling tomorrow. Canada beat Switzerland 6-5 and Sweden throttled China 9-4.

2:28 – Finland leads 2-1 after two periods

4:30 – Half hour until the women’s gold medal hockey game.

4:43 – I have the results from the nordic combined. DO NOT HIGHLIGHT THE NEXT LINE IF YOU DONT WANT IT TO BE SPOILED

Bill DeMong of the United States has won the large hill nordic combined. It is the United States’ first ever gold in the sport. Johnny Spillane, also of the US, won silver, and Bernard Gruber of Austria won bronze

Ok so it was over two lines, my bad

4:55 – In men’s curling semifinals, Sweden and Canada are tied at 1 after 3 ends.

5:38 – Women’s gold medal game underway, US vs. Canada

5:44 – Great save by the Canadian goalie there on a Jocelyne Lamoureux wrister.

5:47 – Terrible call there by the refs. Total dive by the Canadian. Such favoritism.

5:49 – Canada commits their 8th penalty of the game, and is whistled for their 1st.

5:51 – A Canadian defenseman into the box for a bodycheck

5:53 – Nice save there by Canada’s goalie, even if the shot would have gone to the glass

5:55 – 1-0 Canada

5:56 – The US has dominated play so far, but it’s the Canadians who are on the board first. Good shot there.

5:56 – Doc just said a Canadian player is wearing a pearl necklace. I bet she is.

5:58 – wicked slash there by Canada. Bet that one hurt. Another power play for the US. Hopefully this one is better than the last couple.

6:00 – USA penalty for touching another player. Canada scores immediately. It’s 1 to 1 to 0.

6:03 – They’re not aware of the blue line today apparently.

6:07 – End of 1. Im going to see if I can sneak in a dinner break

6:35 – If I were Canada’s coach I would just tell a player to stay in the offensive zone because it’s not like they get called for offsides anyways.

6:37 – Canada back on the power play. Shocker there.

6:42 – The US needs to make Canada make some of the saves that Vetter has had to make.

6:42 – Another penalty on the US? You don’t say

6:50 – Still 2-0 Canada after 2

Holy cow Slovakia 4 Sweden 3? I bet Team Canada are feeling overconfident too and thinking they will simply just outbody Slovakia. Nope. I will do some spying later today on them. 😀

I saw the physical first period 0-0 and then feel asleep because I had to at work bright and early today.

It looks like it was the best game of the night — good enough that I will watch the replay in slow time in March (I haven’t given a rip about March Madness for about 12 years) along with the downhill skiing recaps.

Fetch, pssst, your new website has some major technical issues. I cannot access it today at all, so maybe it is an issue with the Bloguin network because I don’t blog on any other Bloguin sites. It could be related my work computer that’s having issues too, so I’ll check it out at home late tonight.

Pass on the word to the guys in case others are having issues.

I’ve gotten on all day Paolo.

Thanks for bringing it up though, I’ll look into it.

It’s okay now thanks. Apparently it was the ONE site that my malfunctioning computer at work could not access today.

But why are all the new posts missing from it and here? Slackers!

Did you guys see the video of the Russian celebrating when the Canadian bobsled crash? Hilarity ensued when he remembered he was on camera.

Damnit can’t watch this clip at work. 😦 Sistah Cracka welcome back. 🙂

What’s the latest on the cat-fight between Mancuso and Vonn?

Last night on here we were each unanimously behind Mancuso.

Or at least wishing we were as well. 😛

5:47 – Terrible call there by the refs. Total dive by the Canadian. Such favoritism.

Come on. All three penalty calls have been valid. I don’t understand why 95% of sports fans lose all objectivity when it’s an international game.

That was one hell of a shot.

GG welcome! Any thoughts on Slovakia as referenced in my remark above? It was too late for me to watch the game but it sounded like the best game last night!

Are your countrymen feeling cocky about this opponent now though?

Some people think the team has an easier trip to Gold medal game now but the Slovaks are obviously doing something right. I’m sure the players aren’t overlooking them.
