Night 13 Open Thread

Go to puckinghilarious.com for T-shirts like this cool one

Tonight from Vancouver, most eye-balls will be on the Russia vs. Canada hockey game, as one of the two teams tabbed for the Gold medal will be sent home in the quarterfinals, medal-less.

But there is plenty else happening tonight: Apolo Ohno, who has had the best Olympic career of any US winter Olympian, returns to the short-track oval for the 500m. Also, some tape delayed women’s skiing. There’s also the women’s aerials finals, cross country, and bobsled.

And over on CNBC, the Czech Republic and Finland square off to see who plays the United States in the semifinals, followed by Slovakia-Sweden.

Should be a good night folks. See you in the comments.

6:31 – Sweden up 1 in the 9th end. GBR has the hammer

6:38 – Canada makes it 1-0

6:46 – 2-0 Canada. Dan Boyle.

7:02 – 3-1 now. Kallinin with a wrister for Russia. Sweden-GBR in the 11th end.

7:09 – Well, it’s 4-1 Canada, and the “Ovechkin is the best player in the NHL” argument is over.

7:15 – Sweden wins the tiebreaker 7-6 and advances to the semis against Canada.

7:24 – Petter Northug Jr. of Norway just erased a 34 second deficit in 6 miles to steal a silver in the team pursuit.

7:26 – From SB Nation: Sven Kramer is keeping his coach, who as you will remember from yesterday, cost him a Gold medal yesterday.

7:45 – Much like Canada’s narrow victory over Switzerland, there’s nothing to learn about what kind of a team they have tonight. Russia’s defense is just awful, and why I wanted them to win. Alas…

8:07 – The “Julia Mancuso got sent down the run too early” fiasco is another black eye for these games.

8:11 – Mens 500m short track coming up.

8:14 – Sung Si Bek and Kirstholz advance in the 500m. If these spellings are WAY off, I apologize.

8:17 – Eric Staal is down and he is hurt. Volchenkov hasn’t been assessed a penalty yet.

8:32 – Apolo Ohno advances in the 500. Interestingly, he says it isn’t his best distance, yet he is the defending Olympic and World Champion

8:43 – For fuck’s sake Canada. What a bunch of classless assholes.

8:46 – I suppose if I admonish Canada, I should admonish Russia as well. They have been pretty classless as well.

8:54 – Shanna Roebuck up next in the bobsled.

8:59 – Roebuck up now. The other American, Erin Pac, is in 2nd

9:01 – Roebuck still in 6th. Disappointing.

9:16 – South Korea DQed from short track relay. US gets a bronze. First medal for the US women’s short track in 16 years.

10:01 – Canada takes gold and silver in women’s bobsled. United States takes bronze.

10:04 – Women’s aerials finals on now. United States aren’t expected to medal.

10:08 – Ashley Caldwell into 1st in the aerials.

10:24 – Assoli Slivets of Belarus into 3rd

10:26 – Australia’s Lydia Lassila into 1st.

10:30 – And that’s it! Lassila takes 1st. Two of the great Chinese team takes 2nd and 3rd

With the primetime coverage over, I bid you all adieu. Once again, there is a game and a half of hockey left, and I’ll show up in the comments.

I’m pulling for the commies because we embarrassed canada and im sure the whole country of canada let them boys know it and you dont wanna be on the end of that kind of retribution. motivation plus their talent would be really difficult to beat.

Uh, they are no longer communist Mrejr — more like state-sponsored mafia like we have also here though more quietly. Before you judge that comment, try living in Metro DC for awhile.

Most folks don’t stay long and leave after a few years fed up because it sucks high ass more than most places on the East Coast.

Game is in like 15 minutes I guess. NBC lied to me.

i’d bang Maria Bartiromo…she is the only positive thing about this being on cnbc

      Erin Burnett >>>>> Maria Bartiromo

Why do think Fox News Channel rotates mostly blondes and its average viewer age is 62 and predominantly male? Murdoch did not forget much of what brought him to success in his start with tabloids.

Maria Bartiromo in the last 5 years looks like one of those “Faces of Meth” chicks. She is rode hard and put away wet ugly

    • Paolo X
      February 24, 2010 at 8:55 pm

I’ve seen her in person before and she’s a nice lady in all fairness, but she is well out of her league in her primetime as the main gal on there post Sue Herrera’s days in the late 1990s. She lost all remaining credibility when she was going to fly to Asia on Citigroup’s tab, but damn if she did not end up in Davos for that World Economic Forum again this year.

She should have gone with the plastic surgery earlier in her career too. They were smart to replace her with “girl next door” Erin Burnett.

You are right JPQ now Bartiromo’s act is all washed up as it has been for at least 7 years, and she’s still trying to hard to make something of her career riding the wrong horse until like others on that sorry-ass CNBC she will be laid off with others at NBC as is coming as long overdue at ABC.

Normally I don’t wish badly on folks to lose their jobs, but when it comes to most East Coast media douches, Washington fuckhead stiffs, or many a Wall Streeter Manhattanite, fuck ’em because they have been out of touch with the rest of us for way, way too long.

Well from this game we can see how solid of a team Switzerland was against the US and Canada after their first game against Team USA.

I bet that Switzerland could beat Russia.

Where is that GG? We have to find out what he did to improve his team up there other than change the keeper.

  9. February 24, 2010 at 8:50 pm

    That game was a shmashmortion.

Paolo: You’re right. Canada is good, but that game was more about Russia playing like total shit.

Wow Jeremy Roenik didn’t! He said Eurotrash!

Awful professional move at the Olympics though common rhetoric amongst North American hockey players. They really hate Euro players it seems.

Anyway, watch him and NBC catch hell for that and rightly so.

      February 24, 2010 at 9:00 pm

Wow Jeremy Roenik didn’t! He said Eurotrash!

That’s funny. I think Don Cherry invented the hatred of Euros in hockey, or at least perpetuated it

fetch: Robbie Hummel hurt his knee tonight. They think maybe ACL

I caught the Euro trash comment as well…very funny

It will be a even better night the night when all of canada has to hear our anthem after medals are handed out for hockey

      • Garland Greene
        February 24, 2010 at 9:29 pm

I’m not really into the trash talking thing so I don’t have a witty comeback. I’ll just let them play the games and hope for the best.

    • Paolo X
      February 24, 2010 at 9:24 pm

Uh, deliberately understated I can tell …GG what is your thorough point of view after you recover from the euphoria?

Hey I’m making some real peameal tonight! With chili before though — the perfect combination in view of a rematch squared with Canada (2002 Olympic final and of last game).

Wow such a dirty game between the Czech Republic and Finland.

The US will have to execute better on its power plays to beat either team with more security instead of how we beat Switzerland today. I’d be far more fearful going into the 3rd period scoreless against either of these teams. I am not sure to which team to give the edge yet.

      • Garland Greene
        February 24, 2010 at 9:35 pm

I’m just watching the game now. My son had his own hockey game this evening so I had to fire up the PVR. I’ve heard the score obviously but I’ll watch the game anyway.

My reference to a good night was a combination of happiness about the hockey game and the Women’s bobsled results.

I’m spying on one of the Canadian boards guys. Rather good feedback though they overrate Russia relative to the Swiss but stop short of overconfidence. All the same they are cheering for Slovakia.

I actually believe both Slovakia and Sweden will give them major issues.

At the very least, should Slovakia pull off the upset, they will play Team Canada just as physical or more than the Russians and beat them up badly.

    • Garland Greene
      February 24, 2010 at 9:41 pm

I’m not worried about any team physically dominating the Canadian team. There’s a solid mix of guys who can dish it out (Weber, Doughty, Iginla, Nash and others) as well as guys that can fight through a physical game (Crosby is the best in the world at this) while still delivering results.

The Swede’s skill and goaltending is what concerns me. That will be a hell of a game if it happens.

  14. Paolo X
    February 24, 2010 at 9:41 pm

Lots of dirty play in this game with the ref’s apparently letting them play. Lots of chippy slashing. I doubt there will be many players without severe, huge bruises from tight to calf after this game.

Each team’s PP kill is looking solid, and that will be quite the problem for Team USA given that our power play is not very good.

We might have to beat either on plain quickness or physically in the run-of-play as we did Switzerland in a low scoring affair.

The Vonn-Mancuso cat fight heats up.

If you are like me now you will picture them both wearing only skiboots in the powder or hot and naked in the hot tub having it out. No hair pulling or eye-gouging and bitch-slapping encouraged and worth bonus points.

    • jpq1999
      February 24, 2010 at 9:53 pm

I heard Mancuso on Cowherd on Monday, and she made it pretty clear they don’t get along. Cowherd could feel it, and asked if they would still go out and have a beer after a race, and Mancuso said no. She said they were friends as kids, but over the years, competing against each other, she said it’s hard to stay friends

Plus, Vonn seems like a bitch and a diva

      • February 24, 2010 at 10:01 pm

Vonn does seem like a bitch.

        Mancuso is way hotter.

      • Paolo X
        February 24, 2010 at 10:33 pm

I will have to agree with you both now and give Mancuso a slight edge. She’s spicy too because she has her own line of underwear already. Vonn is not spicy at all, married, but more the sweetheart type.

So Mancuso will be the next American athletic babe, taking the crown from that bitch Danica Patrick who has had it way too long? Or other candidates?

I know you guys watched the game hours ago but I have to mention how good Shea Weber and Drew Doughty are. Outstanding.

    • Paolo X
      February 24, 2010 at 10:36 pm

Keep posting the insights at least I will be here awhile. Wait until you see how nasty they start to get out there in the 3rd period.

I am surprised a major penalty was not called and think it should have been, but I won’t spoil it for you. At that point of the game, it would not have mattered for sake of the result anyway.

  17. Paolo X
    February 24, 2010 at 10:56 pm

Well, any way this slices now I am convinced that the semifinals will be extremely physical since all the remaining teams have also a physical game. I wonder just how dirty it will get too.

Incredible goalkeeping by Finland, Czech, USA, Latvia, and Switzerland in this medal round. I don’t know if there ever have been so many superb goaltenders in an Olympic tournament.

The commentator just remarked to indicate that the ref’s are really, really being loose in this game.

  18. Paolo X
    February 24, 2010 at 11:02 pm

They are playing “Fortunate Son” by CCR in Canada?

Bad break for the Czechs and excellent commentary by the announcer that in the NHL it probably would not have been a goal.

  19. Paolo X
    February 24, 2010 at 11:10 pm

Finland it is — 2-0 on the empty net goal …Team USA will have its hands really full with the Finns.

    • February 24, 2010 at 11:22 pm

Hopefully we can score on them. Their offense wasn’t very proficient.
