Night 10 Open Thread

Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto try to upgrade their medal

Night 10 at the Olympics is a long one. In tape delayed action, we will get to see the results of the men’s Super G and ski cross.

NBC has Tanith Belbin and Ben Agosto going for their shot at Olympic Gold, a strong Canadian women’s team goes for speedskating Gold, and 2 man bobsled concludes.

But the marquee matchup tonight takes place at Canada Place, as the United States and Canada face off in hockey to determine the winner of their pool.

Should be a big night, so hopefully you’ll join me.

6:13 – Sorry to jpq, GG and Jersey. I don’t check the moderation thing too often.

6:13 – For the record, my view on the NBC/MSNBC thing for hockey is this: Yes it sucks that hockey is on MSNBC with no HD, but I guarantee that ice dancing will get more eyeballs than hockey ever would, and would you really want a hockey game broken up to go watch coverage of bobsled or a human interest piece?

6:15 – Boer of the Netherlands goes into first. Trying to replicate what Mark Tuitert did in the men’s 1500 last night

6:19 – In curling, Britain blanks the 9th end. They have the hammer up by 1 in the 10th.

6:19 – With a stellar final lap, the Netherlands Irene Wust takes the lead in the 1000 meters.

6:26 – Groves of Canada, after leading for pretty much the whole race, clocks in with the 2nd best time. One pair left, including the 1500m winner.

6:32 – Christine Nesbitt of Canada fades on the final lap and finishes 6th. Irene Wust wins gold. Groves of Canada second and Sablikova of the Czech Republic third. Disappointing for the hosts.

6:36 – Great Britain beats the US 4-2 in mens curling. US medal hopes are over.

6:37 – Super G on NBC right now. Results are in the previous post if you want them.

6:45 – USA in their 1960 throwbacks.

6:46 – 41 seconds in and it’s 1-0 USA!!! Looks like Brian Rafalski got it.

6:50 – David Backes is probably my new non-Penguin. I love the way he plays hockey.

6:51 – Nice save by Miller on Crosby. Big hit by Rick Nash on the other end.

6:52 – Ryan Getzlaf getting sent to the box for goalie interference. Commence Canadian bitching.

6:55 – Really poor power play there. Couldn’t really get anything started.

6:55 – Joe Pavelski in the box for a high stick.

7:00 – Staal scores for Canada. 1-1.

7:01 – Another US goal! Another goal by Rafalski! 2-1 States.

7:05 – Nice backcheck by Crosby there to keep it in the zone.

7:09 – Rare is the game that lives up to its hype. I think we’ll have one here.

7:10 – Uh, ice dancing is on NBC if you’re interested.

7:19 – End of the first, United States lead 2-1

Quick notes on our goalie Ryan Miller. In 2000-01, Miller, a Sophomore goalie at Michigan State, won the Hobey Baker award (college hockey’s Heisman) with a 1.33 GAA and a .950 save percentage, an NCAA Record. He also had an NCAA record 10 shutouts.

Miller took that Spartan team to the Frozen Four, even though the only NHL player on that team was John Michael-Liles, who plays for the Avalanche. They had a grand total of zero players who scored a point per game.

7:34 – 2nd period underway.

7:27 – Some nice work by Erik Johnson there. There’s a reason he was the #1 overall pick.

7:39 – 2-2. Heatley for the Canadians.

7:44 – Michael Schmid of Switzerland wins the first ski cross Gold medal.

7:55 – Canada has been outplaying the US for awhile here, but it stays knotted at 2

7:57 – Joe Pavelski fires a shot off Brodeur’s mash and into the stands.

8:00 – Three Canadians run into each other. Interesting?

8:01 – Forget what I said about Chris Drury shouldn’t be on the Olympic team. He makes it 3-2 United States after Brodeur misplayed a puck, and scrambled out of his net.

8:04 – Couple huge saves on breakaways by Martin Brodeur there. Didn’t freeze the puck on the 2nd one, but got the whistle

8:05 – Eric Staal whistled for a penalty there. 55 seconds left.

8:80 – Last couple runs of the super combined on NBC right now.

8:23 – And we’re back. US with a couple good chances but couldn’t convert. Sidney Crosby to the box for a high-stick.

8:26 – Great penalty kill by Canada there. Not much you can do against that.

8:29 – Another Canada penalty to Corey Perry for slashing. PP time is obviously good news for the United States. A goal here would be huge.

8:32 – A Brian Rafalski slapper gets tipped in by Jamie Langenbrunner and the United States lead 4-2!

8:33 – And Ryan Miller with the best save you’ll see in awhile.

8:38 – Patrick Kane in the box for a trip. Big power play here for the Canadians.

8:41 – Big big kill there for the United States. Drury and Callahan played huge roles.

8:43 – Just over 5 minutes left in the game. This has been pretty fun huh?

8:44 – Erik Johnson goes to the box. Bogus penalty there.

8:47 – Two absolutely desperate saves there by Mller. 30 secs left on the power play.

8:47 – Goal by Sidney Crosby gets it to 4-3. Just over 3 minutes left.

8:52 – I don’t think there is a good enough writer in the world, and it’s certainly not me, to summarize that action. US still leads by 1, with just over a minute left.

8:53 – Ryan Kesler just proved that grit, effort and determination sometimes outweigh talent. Ryan Kesler dives around Corey Perry with a one handed shot for a 5-3 United States lead.

8:55 – I am stealing this one from Greg Wyshinski, aka Puck Daddy: DO YOU BELIEVE IN MILLERCLES? YES!

9:01 – I would just like to say that I am naming my first kid Ryan Miller Brian Rafalski Ryan Kesler Fetch. He’s destined for greatness.

9:05 – Soooooo, women’s curling is on CNBC if you’re interested.

9:17 – Davis and White just went in ice dancing. I’ll be honest, I missed their scores. Looked like they did well though.

9:18 – Nevermind I did see. With a personal best they are into first place!

9:38 – And now the Canadian pair is in first. Belbin and Agosto up next.

9:44 – Belbin and Agosto are in 4th place after their 2nd dance. Still, 2 US pairs have a shot for Gold.

9:55 – No surprise there, the US doesn’t medal in 2 man bobsled. Germany’s sleds go 1 and 2. Russia takes 3rd.

10:02 – Sweden up 3-1 in the 5th end. US has the hammer.

10:10 – US could only take 1. Sweden with the hammer, up 1.

10:31 – Alright, looks like the US is gonna lose again, so I’m going to call it a night. See you all tomorrow.

I never thought i’d be truly excited to watch a hockey game, but this is gonna be awesome. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with hockey, but i just can’t follow it based on where i live and there being no professional team here. U-S- and A yeeeeehaaaww!

JPQ in da house! Wow this really is big now! Yes they are nice people you know? Heck I’d move there if I found work in Alberta — it’s not like the winter is going to be worse than our own has been in Philly, and heck my folks have a place in Florida anyway …

I actually am a frequent commenter now on the CFL forum where amazingly intelligent football conversation tends to be the norm unlike down here even on the NFL site with too many homers and douchebag fans like for those Eagles, Jets, folks who think SportsNation is a cool show, et cetera.

Plus here everyone is into that fantasy shit now instead of real X’s and O’s and betting real skin.

Men’s figure skating is probably the only thing i can’t stand to watch in the winter olympics. Other than that, I can pretty much watch everything else. A guy i know is having a party at a bar around here tonight for his birthday. There’s gonna be alot of chicks up there and i can’t keep myself in tonight to watch some olympics, which is pretty much the only thing i feel like doing tonight. Who does this on a Sunday for Christsake. Poop Tales, Hi-Yo

I can’t see you enjoying ice dancing either PL, and if you are into curling, well okay fine. Figure skating and curling are about 50% of NBC’s coverage apparently, so as a country no wonder we are fucked. 😦

Wow bring back some tales from the party other than about poop please PL.

Well okay back to my spicy chili and chips to be chased by bourbon. πŸ˜€

That’s an All-American meal Canada go back to your Molson and peameal! (actually I like those too and have real peameal in the refrigator but not tonight no way)

(For my fellow Americans, peameal is basically back bacon which we know as Canadian bacon, and it’s NOT the fake one that is really dressed up ham; hard to find in the US but better than our bacon)

My favorite trip besides Cabo was Windsor for a weekend in college/ It was 2005. Our Saturday night involved strippers and some, well, pros. Great weekend. We ran out of money and had to sleep in out car at 4 am in the casino parking lot.

Save some money Jersey, take a bit of it and go to Vegas. Report back to us with photos and a graphic blog.

Be very careful with the pros too. I don’t trust them plus working the game for porn sex is better and cheaper . πŸ˜€

        Good one GG:

        Paolo:

Kane (who’s father is a friend of mine), got drunk and took a cab home from the Buffalo bars. They paid the cabbie, and, when he didn’t have the roughly $.10 change, they beat the cabbie up. Not a shining moment for the Kane family, I’m afraid

      • Garland Greene
        February 21, 2010 at 8:45 pm

Kane and a relative were in trouble this past summer for beating up a cabbie in Buffalo over some kind of fare dispute.

Also, I saw Rick Nash go all Wendel Clark on a four opponents during a minor hockey game when he was about 14. They were cheap shotting him all night and he decided to give some back at the end of the game. One of my more vivid hockey memories.

        Who’s Wendel Clark? This guy:

    • Garland Greene
      February 21, 2010 at 9:24 pm

The TV media is being reasonable so far. They’re chalking it up to great goaltending beats poor goaltending and bad penalties kill you.

The print media tend to be sensationalize this shit so they’ll take their pound of flesh tomorrow. Yzerman will be criticized for some selections, Babcock will be ripped for not using his timeout and Brodeur and a few other fuck ups will be called out.

Life will go on. However, things will go south quickly if they fall out of contention for the Gold (other colours don’t matter).

duffy is a fucking hack. i hate all these “we should win because we’re america.” ‘realist’ douchebags…like we can’t ever be the underdog in anything. why do douchebags insist on shitting on anything that goes well for anything that goes well for America? Duffy is a sub-par writer as well. Dude thinks because he puts big word into a post it will be good…sorryduffy but my average blog posts are better than your great ones. he is fucking ignorant.

/end rant..just saw what he said on twitter and esploded

    • February 21, 2010 at 10:27 pm

I actually like what Duffy writes usually, but the “we should win the medal count in the Winter Olympics” is so stupid it’s not even funny.

He is an average writer at best.

Duffy is excellent on one topic and one topic only — soccer.

The comment referenced by Mrejr would probably drive me nuts too but I don’t tweet.

Despite claims of me being a chief nemesis present or past of Duffy, note that I for three months now I have commented and support his soccer blog off that site.

We will be going back and forth on the World Cup more and more of course.

Otherwise I do not like at all most of his other posts with his New Yorker or Londoner left-wing ideological slant and attempts at ideological subversion even though they are supposed to be about sports.

Plus we have that immense natural clash on many counts like I went to Notre Dame and am Italian as well, but he’s solid on what he is best at all the same.

Duffy is a good writer in some ways, but, since he is writing blog pieces, he should learn to adapt and write to his audience. He tends to purposely write “above” his audience, and, coupled with his sometimes swarmy “I’m smarter than you” attitude, comes off kinda douchy.

I’m a Mensa guy, and never tell anyone. Some people try to smash you over the head w/ their intelligence. I guess with old age brings confidence in things like that-lol

          February 21, 2010 at 10:47 pm

He writes above his own intelligence not just his audience’s. And like Paolo said far better than I could

I do not like at all most of his other posts with his New Yorker or Londoner left-wing ideological slant and attempts at ideological subversion even though they are supposed to be about sports.

Duffy writes like he hasn’t spent a second in the real world having to earn anything. any how this isn’t about a second rate blog writer this is about us kicking the shit out of Canada in their sport.

          February 21, 2010 at 10:48 pm

JPQ that’s fantastic because amongst the Mensa folks you are likely one of the few who does not introduce that fact.

I always distrust anyone who tries to impress me with their qualifications before I really get to know them. Most of the time they are full of shit, but when they actually have those qualifications they seemed to never have learned humility or modesty.

And that’s why some of them who get a random ass-kicking when at the wrong place at the wrong time are begging for it when it comes to that.

            Paolo:

Yeah, I’ve never said it on TBL, and only did tonight because…I don’t even know why.-lol

People sometimes think they are so much smarter than the room, and, like you said, real world experience is infinitely more important anyway.

One look at Obama and his advisors of intellectuals and theoreticals who have never worked for a company or started a business in their life certainly prove that point. They don’t know how to really create jobs because they’ve never had a “real” one

It’s okay Fetch that’s the only glitch so far that was within your control — don’t beat yourself up dude this is quite the endeavour.

People ask me often why I don’t have my own blog, and there might be a time and place for that, but right now whilst in transition somewhere else is just one of a few reasons it’s not a good time.

When it’s owned by you whatever it is, it’s more than just a recreational activity too it’s extra work, so you can’t just do it you have to do it right or it reflects poorly on you irrespective of the content.

There is no shortage of bad blogs out there now with otherwise decent content mind you, but you are correct presentation means an awful lot like for anything else in life.

Preach ohnnn brotha Mrejr preach ohnnn …we ought be very proud of that hard-earned win not just out of patriotism but as I will explain after reviewing some of the tape and checking the stats.

Canada and Finland are slightly better than are we are getting shots off on the power play.

Canada outshot us 45-23, with our save edge an incredible 43-18 and not to be taken for granted for the rest of the games.

Our edge over Canada was in not committing penalties to give them even more chances than they had, for I am not sure that Miller will have the game of his life or close to it every single game to stop all those shots that our gritty defense managed to scramble to thwart on some occasions.

We’ll take that win with immense pride no doubt, and on to the medal round now for which we must elevate our game yet again.

  111. February 21, 2010 at 10:32 pm

OK OK OK. I think I have this shit figured out. We want Sweden to win in regulation by less than five goals OR… OR. OR. Finland to win in overtime. But not both. I totally got an A in Logic when I was in college. PS. Logic was a fucking class when I was in college. In a completely related story, I’m the best drunk driver in the history of drunk drivers. Anyway, we don’t want to play Canada or Russia until the Gold game and the two scenarios I just mentioned (I’ve already forgotten what they were) that gets accomplished. Oh and by the way fuck Canada. Peace, bitches.

    • February 21, 2010 at 10:34 pm

      all of that is true

    • Paolo X
      February 21, 2010 at 11:03 pm

I don’t know what driving drunk has to do with logic, but hey I understood your explanation of the latter and I’ve put the former in my past and never got busted somehow God bless. And that includes living three years in Las Vegas too mind you.

I was born right on time for sake of those currently fascist laws any more, and it is just not worth the risk.

BTW the most likely places and times to get busted for driving drunk are on three-day holiday weekends in major metro areas, due to the federal DOT dollars subsidising those crackdowns at the local level, and in a college town over a football weekend.

In some police departments they have unofficial bounties of sorts, and they do keep those stats for those campaigns so that they can qualify for more funding (more government bureaucracy boo-yah!)

The toughest cops to avoid are the motorcycle cops too, who are my only source of speeding tickets on two occasions in fascist Northern VA in Metro DC.

Back to hockey — Canada and Finland are the most dangerous teams, and see my previous comment on the analysis of our win.

I think Team USA can take Russia and the Czechs, but strangely I feel like Slovakia would be a greater challenge with their game improving and a tough defense.

Finland are in all blue as I have never seen them before but look really cool …best uniforms of the tournament after Canada’s reds and USA’s blues.

Sweden are in their classic home uniforms …I am surprised that the rules allow both teams to have a similar colour for any part of the uniform, which in this case would be those “over-shorts” or whatever they are called in almost the same shade of blue.

    Getting chippy out there now.

Let’s turn it over to our the site’s fashion guru Fetch. πŸ˜›

    • February 21, 2010 at 11:41 pm

Haha why am I the fashion guru?

      • Paolo X
        February 22, 2010 at 12:17 am

Because whatever you did to help out John Shuster from his slump Fetch, plus improvements for his wardrobe after that horrendous fashion emergency for USA Curling, seemed to have worked.

I don’t think they played better but perhaps they looked better, and that’s a good start for some improvement.

I don’t think you can be champions in any sport taking the venue looking like slobs as did our men’s team compared to the competition. Well on second thought unless perhaps you are John Daly, but he is way past his peak and even he crashed and burned from getting too sloppy including sloppy-ass drunk.

High self image is underestimated. Keep up the good work. πŸ˜€

ha, just got home tonight and saw you fellas talkin bout duffy. on the other hand, i can appreciate duffy’s analysis about soccer, (dude is a great writer mrejer) but i can’t respect a guy who writes about the sport of soccer until he tells me who he has played for and the clubs he’s played against. I have played all over this world and this country and my opinion is……. if you write about futbol, tell me who you played futbol for. I get the feeling Duffy is a dude that could never hack it and if he ever played ball i would have seen his ass if he ever played in the midwest/east coast area. Where did you play duffy?? Tell me your club team….because soccer is the 1 SPORT, where if you play yourself as an expert, you better know what the fuck you are talking about rather than talking that stupid shit you do over at TBL. If you played real ball i would have ran into you ass, tell me where you played and who you played for and i will give you some credibility.

          /oh yea
