Night 9 Open Thread

Apolo Ohno and Allison Baver (R) go for medals tonight in short track

Night 9 in Vancouver sees a return to perhaps the games most exciting sport: speedskating. Apolo Ohno tries to pass Bonnie Blair tonight in short track, and Shani Davis goes for his 2nd gold in longtrack.

We also see the return to alpine skiing, as Lindsey Vonn and Julia Mancuso go for Gold in Super G. The US alpine skiing team has already had its most successful Olympics ever, surpassing what it did in Sarajevo in 1984.

In hockey, Slovakia and Latvia wrap up their portion of group play, and on CNBC at 9 Central, the best curling match you will ever see takes place, as Great Britain takes on Canada.7:30 – 1500m time. Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick could go 1-2

7:33 – Mo Tae Bung of Korea has the top time as of now. Lots of people left.

7:40 – Russia’s Skobrev flies around on the final lap clocks in with a time of 1:46.42 to take the lead away!

7:56 – Netherlands Tuitert and Norway’s Bokko are now 1st and 2nd. Skobrev in 3rd

7:50 – Hedrick takes 5th. No medal for his last Olympic race.

7:55 – Shani gets silver in the 1500. Skated a good race, but Tuitert skated a perfect one.

8:02 – Super G time for the women. More tape delayed goodness from NBC

8:42 – Short track should be coming up anytime now.

8:45 – Slovakia killed Latvia. Could be a medal contender.

8:49 – Apolo Ohno is a surgeon. He and the Canadian Charles Hamelin are into the semis.

8:55 – two false starts here. Weird for a 1000

8:57 – Lee Jung-Soo leads most of the way and advances to the semis. JR Celski up next

9:02 – I thought Celski got a little lucky to win his bronze, but he is a future star

9:08 – Canada and Great Britain in men’s curling on CNBC

9:22 – Looking at the men’s and women’s curling standings, both American teams have a shot to make the medal round. They’re going to need a lot of help, but it is possible.

9:32 – Wayne Gretzky is in the house to watch Canada-Britain

9:34 – JR Celski gets disqualified. Francois Hamelin gets advanced. Some home cookin there.

9:35 – This is a tough tough semi. 2 guys good enough to win a medal won’t advance.

9:38 – What a move by Ohno! He flies into first to make the final! What a race. Hamelin advances to the final by .006 seconds.

9:40 – Back to curling, Canada is up 2-0. Good news for the Americans.

9:44 – 2 man Bobsled time. The US hasn’t won a medal in this event in 62 years.

9:46 – US takes the lead! 2 of 4 runs down. Hopefully they can continue.

9:49 – And just like that Russia goes into the lead. Still 2 runs left.

10:01 – Delay at short track. Enjoy some tape delayed garbage in the meantime!

10:04 – OK maybe not. Sorry, NBC.

Apolo Ohno is next. Great Britain leads Canada 3-2. Canada with the hammer.

10:10 – Cool feature on the US Women’s hockey team over on MSNBC if you need something to watch after Ohno

10:14 – Michael Phelps in the house.

10:18 – Korea goes 1-2 and, although Apolo Ohno slipped, he takes the Bronze. Without that bump from the Canadian he would have won at least a silver.

10:20 – With his 7th medal, Ohno passes Bonnie Blair as the most decorated US Winter Olympian ever.

10:22 – Halfway through the curling, Great Britain leads Canada 4-3

10:29 – Everyone make sure to check out that Miracle on Ice special on Sunday. It may or may not get a bit misty.
