Night 6 Open Thread

Apolo takes aim at history tonight.

Tonight is NBC’s most star studded evening yet. The main attraction is Apolo Ohno, who returns to the track in an attempt to surpass Bonnie Blair as the most decorated US Winter Olympian ever. He will race on NBC later.

In the women’s downhill, Lindsey Vonn tests her bruised shin. The results were earlier today, but if you know them I would kindly ask you do not post them here. Thanks.

Also on NBC, snowboarding’s superstar Shaun White begins his quest to defend his Gold in the halfpipe prelims.

Last but not least, Shani Davis goes for Gold in the 1000 meters, and attempts to leave his mark on the sport of longtrack speedskating.

Over on CNBC we have the end of men’s curling, and then Sweden takes on Germany in hockey.

7:09 – Shaun White’s run is coming up on NBC

7:10 – Fairly clean house for the US. One guard up, but shouldn’t pose too much of a problem

7:15 – If Switzerland gets the double here I’m going to punch myself in the face. Not a good spot by Shuster.

7:19 – Shuster has a shot for the win, although a tough one.

7:20 – And he misses. I am despondent.

7:26 – If I told you John Shuster was a Vikings fan, that wouldn’t surprise you at all would it?

7:28 – Germany is actually outplaying Sweden here, but Sweden has a power play less than 4 mins into the 2nd.

7:31 – Shani Davis time when we come back.

7:31 – From Mrejr

7:33 – Mattias Ohlund makes it 1-0 Sweden. Got away with goalie interference.

7:37 – Canadian medal hopeful Denny Morrison finishes 12th and will not medal. Shani Davis goes for gold next.

7:41- He does it! Shani Davis is the first person to repeat as a Gold medalist in the 1,000. Chad Hedrick takes the Bronze.

7:47 – Short track time. Absolute chaos.

7:56 – JR Celski leaves it pretty close and almost gives me a heart attack, but makes 2 passes look easy as he advances.

8:02 – Some bumping, but Lee-Ho Suk and Silovs advance

8:21 – Julia Mancuso is in 1st after her run

8:22 – Holzer of Germany in the penalty box. Sweden leads 2-0

8:35 – Vonn with a clean run, and she’s into first by about a half second. Needless to say, shes pretty stoked.

8:37 – She also sounded like she was having sex for awhile there. That was….interesting.

8:41 – Sweden defeats Germany 2-0. Kinda surprising with the team that Sweden has. The Sedins, Backstrom, Zetterberg, etc. Should they not be mentioned with the Gold medal favorites, or is Germany good? I lean towards the latter to be honest.

8:42 – If Anja Paersson is still alive, that is a miracle. I can’t imagine how that would hurt.

8:50 – Alright folks, dinner break. Back in 10-15

9:14 – And I’m back just in time for the Snowboarding men’s final. All 4 Americans  are contenders, but Shaun White is obviously the favorite.

9:17 – I dont know how well I could snowboard with some guy announcing it so the whole crowd would hear. Maybe that’s why some guys throw in an iPod when they do their runs.

9:20 – I would like to quick give you all a shoutout for the great comments. You don’t know how much I appreciate the interest.

9:21 – Scottie Lago with apparently the best run he’s had all year. I can’t say I’m too up on the snowboarding so I wouldn’t know

9:24 – Greg Bretz with a terrible run, but he gets a 2nd run. They take the best of two

9:30 – Louie Vito with a really good run, and he is in 3rd after the first run.

9:33 – Sportsgal settles a question that I have been wondering since the Olympics started: are the US Snowboarding pants jeans? Turns out they are Gore-Tex that is disguised as denim.

9:38 – Shaun White just threw down a great run. No 1260 though. Still, White is in first after 1 run and he might be able to win the Gold without pushing himself.

9:52 – Bretz goes down again, and he will not medal. But he probably will be back in 4 years.

10:10 – Scottie Lago and Shaun White are next. Both are guaranteed a medal

10:12 – Lago falls, and White gets a free run, having clinched the Gold medal on his first run.

10:13 – This swearing is only going to lead to more tape delays, right?

10:16 – It’s too bad there’s not more than one Snowboarding event, otherwise is there any doubt he’d be the most decorated US Olympian ever?

10:20 – Medal ceremony for Mancuso and Vonn. Should be emotional given Vonn’s injuries.

10:22 – A stat: The United States won as many medals tonight as they did during the entire Calgary Olympics.

10:31 – OK, NBC sure knows how to do out-tro montages. Got a bit dusty on that one.

This seems like as good a place as any to wrap things up for tonight. Special thanks to sportsgal and cracker jack for stopping by for the first time, and for Warden, Franco and MVC (most valuable commenter) Paolo. And to mrejr for pimping me on Twitter like crazy.

Once again I’ll update in the comments.

I bet you see a mini curling popularity explosion after these olympic games. Bigger than last time. it will fade but i could see it getting bigger than it is here

    • February 17, 2010 at 7:14 pm

I hope so. Twitter absolutely blows up whenever it’s on.

And part of it’s appeal is that anyone can do it. Only one guy really needs to know the strategy if you do it recreationally.

So is it odd that Sweden only beat Germany 2-0?

  7. February 17, 2010 at 8:39 pm

christ, alls you need to do is look at how they stop across the finish line to know how physically taxing this event is on her shin.

These wipeouts in downhill skiing are fantastic… they remind me why I gave up skiing after my 2nd try.

    • sportsgal
      February 17, 2010 at 8:42 pm

I was just saying to my dad I’m glad they’re showing us the skiers that fell!

        February 17, 2010 at 8:47 pm

That first girl who was already on her back and got flung into the air by going into a ditch or something… I mean, I didnt want to laugh but….

      • sportsgal
        February 17, 2010 at 8:50 pm

Did you see the girl in cross country fall into a ditch? I thought that one was pretty comical.

      • February 17, 2010 at 8:51 pm

i saw that, it was like the course fell off the side of the earth.

  9. February 17, 2010 at 8:48 pm

as long as none of these girls are seriously hurt than these spills are awesome. that first girl was sliding and then she flew up over that hill and came crashing down, couldnt stop laughing

    February 17, 2010 at 8:55 pm

I thought I would enjoy Roenick going at it with Milbury but instead I just find it super annoying. It’s about as entertaining as the John Clayton/Sean Salisbury barbs.

    • Paolo X
      February 17, 2010 at 9:02 pm

Sportsgal did you see them get into it on the first night? Roenick: “I played for Team USA too …” Wow those dudes I don’t think like each other!

I said in a post that they should take the fights from the rink into the booth, but of course most NHL fans would disagree.

    • February 17, 2010 at 9:16 pm

I wouldn’t be surprised at all if NBC told them to do that

  11. Paolo X
    February 17, 2010 at 9:00 pm

Damn missed a lot fell asleep during curling before did the US win? They were up 5-4.

Now I want our Lindsey Vonn posing naked with only her new gold medal after these games too.

Those folks who tried to call her recent poses “controversial” or something were ninnie bitches and so lame. Now she can really show ’em and fuck those who don’t like it!

Great to see NBC step up the primetime coverage for once and without all the figure skating shit.

Definitely I am watching it all on repeat late night to about 3AM.

    • sportsgal
      February 17, 2010 at 9:01 pm

No, they lost in the 11th end. Shuster fucked up AGAIN. Very disappointing.

      • Paolo X
        February 17, 2010 at 9:08 pm

Damn. If Fetch knows Shuster’s favourite NFL team, then he ought to help them with their fashion sense as well as dietary habits as I commented earlier.

These guys should more look intimidating like they are Marines or something instead of like upscale professional bowlers. If you can’t play good you might as well look good you know.

I bet Shuster had one too many Molsons with a nacho platter at the local bowling alley last night. The mustard stains on the cheesy shirt don’t do him much justice either.

    • February 17, 2010 at 9:20 pm

Figure skating is tomorrow night, Paolo

    February 17, 2010 at 9:02 pm

I friggin love the relay speed skating race! It always looks like mass chaos!

    • Paolo X
      February 17, 2010 at 9:04 pm

Wow dude bit the dust! 27 more laps of this? Woh!

      that spill was awesome

      February 17, 2010 at 9:05 pm

      • sportsgal
        February 17, 2010 at 9:06 pm

That’s what makes it awesome. I can’t even tell how many people are in the relay for each country.

      • February 17, 2010 at 9:07 pm

yeah, seems like a giant clusterfuck out there

  13. February 17, 2010 at 9:04 pm

sweet christ i love these spills

    February 17, 2010 at 9:11 pm

Fetch is having an extra beer I think. I wonder what he had for dinner?

Chili, a pastrami sandwich, and peameal/back bacon/real Canadian bacon here. 😀

    • February 17, 2010 at 9:17 pm

I had a salad and some soup. Trying to lose some winter weight, Paolo.

No doubt I will be having a Sam Adams or two if we win the medal count though.

  15. Warden11
    February 17, 2010 at 9:17 pm

No, it’s not like trying to throw a baseball with your opposite hand. These guys practice that constantly. It’s like a soccer player kicking with his off foot.

    • Paolo X
      February 17, 2010 at 9:37 pm

Warden, sorry probably not like that either, as we practise that too. Even only as an amateur I am ambidextrous with most kicks and with my shots mind you.

And so I don’t know what the winning analogy is …a boxer who can fight southpaw as well?

      • February 17, 2010 at 9:37 pm

        What is this argument over?

      • Paolo X
        February 17, 2010 at 9:42 pm

Ha ha no argument just we are perplexed.

Whilst you were out the commentator was trying to explain to us what it’s like for a snowboard to do a trick with a switchback trick, as in using the non-face side of the board whatever that is called, so he has been using several failed analogies but we have not figured out what a proper one is in non-X sports terms.

Maybe Franco can help us as a snowboarder himself?

      • February 17, 2010 at 9:45 pm

        Ohhhh I gotcha.

I am not a snowboarder so alas I dont know

      • Warden11
        February 17, 2010 at 9:51 pm

I was trying to say going switch was like a soccer player, something these guys do regularly. Yes, it’s more difficult than normal but nowhere close to being similar to throwing a baseball with your non-dominant hand.

      • February 17, 2010 at 9:55 pm

That’s actually probably a good analogy actually. They each practice it, but aren’t quite as good

  16. February 17, 2010 at 9:31 pm

Louie Vito looks like an oompa-loompa

    • Paolo X
      February 17, 2010 at 9:38 pm

With a name like that, antics of the likes of the phonies at Jersey Shore aside, you have to wonder about his connections.

      Don’t blame me blame Hollywood!

      /Paesano’d 😀

  17. Paolo X
    February 17, 2010 at 9:50 pm

Rather cute Canadian chick Maelle Ricker and the French silver medalist …get on that for photos Fetch … I envy the snowboarders in the Olympic Village after the competition is over.

  18. Paolo X
    February 17, 2010 at 9:56 pm

Wow that Japanese dude is tough …he does not even wipe off the blood off his face for his second run …but he falls again.

    February 17, 2010 at 10:07 pm

    Wow! Vi-to Vi-to Vi-to! 😀 1260!

  20. Paolo X

  22. Paolo X
    February 17, 2010 at 10:28 pm

10:13 – This swearing is only going to lead to more tape delays, right?

10:16 – It’s too bad there’s not more than one Snowboarding event, otherwise is there any doubt he’d be the most decorated US Olympian ever?

10:20 – Medal ceremony for Mancuso and Vonn. Should be emotional given Vonn’s injuries.

10:22 – A stat: The United States won as many medals tonight as they did during the entire Calgary Olympics.

Pssst stay out of his way folks …he’s on a roll!

Amazing stat too considering that “conventional wisdom” has had that the Olympics were going to become increasingly less popular in age of media fragmentation!

Good call by NBC to cover them and take them away from CBS after 1998, and otherwise I call media competitor propaganda by those who can munch now sour grapes including the sorry-ass fucks at ESPN yet again.

    • February 17, 2010 at 10:36 pm

I actually kind of want ABC/ESPN to get the games, because I think they’d better utilize all their channels, as well as show more stuff live.

I’m planning a post on it after the Olympics.

  23. Paolo X
    February 17, 2010 at 10:31 pm

No way I can go to sleep now Fetch …I’m staying up late night too …see you in a few then!

I hope that Shaun White cusses it up late night in the interview with Mary Carillo too, as of course it is late after all.

What a great day for Team USA!

  24. February 17, 2010 at 10:35 pm

Once again, many thanks for all the compliments from everyone. Not just here but on Twitter and TBL. The Olympics are my favorite sporting event so I can’t begin to express how grateful I am.

    • February 17, 2010 at 10:37 pm

      very good work

  25. February 17, 2010 at 10:46 pm

Women’s hockey on CNBC if anyone is interested.

And then after that it is Czech Republic and Slovakia in men’s hockey, so quite the rivalry there obviously.

Short track speedskating on NBC in 20 minutes or so.

  26. February 17, 2010 at 11:05 pm

Some Swiss girl just had a sweet goal

  27. February 17, 2010 at 11:11 pm

Costas is going to interview Colbert. Awesome

  28. February 17, 2010 at 11:49 pm

Costas was laughing like a bastard when Colbert jumped into the fireplace

    • Paolo X
      February 18, 2010 at 12:22 am

You know Fetch, I think you might have a point on ABC/ESPN covering the games, with hopefully more of an emphasis on the ABC part and leaving most of the ESPN SportsCenter goofs, Mike & Mike, and daytime douchebags on there off the production!

Hopefully like NBC they’ll hire outside to get the better folks on contract for the Olympics instead of resorting to their lame-ass homer incubated camping out douchebag washed-up talent.

I think Fetch perhaps should be their internet director and creative lead. He has the raw tools and knack for it and just needs to be backed up with the capital. 😀 They better get started this summer as it is a huge job to enhance the experience of internet content with television content profitably.

  29. Paolo X
    February 18, 2010 at 12:25 am

Many choices late night …women’s short track versus men’s hockey earlier …now men’s dual luge, for which I don’t understand at all the point other than watching them for a wreck …mixed couple’s luge with the both wearing chaps and bare underneath and her on top would make more sense.

    • February 18, 2010 at 12:57 am

Sorry Paolo, I was away from the comments section for a little so I didn’t see you asking me for my take on the snowboarding question.

There are righty and lefty snowboards for a reason. When talking about amateurs like ourselves I would almost compare it to dribbling a basketball during your youth. If you’re a righty you prefer to dribble with your right hand, and when you absolutely have to, you’ll switch to your left. You can do both, but you have a preference. I’m not great at snowboarding, but I know the fundamentals, but doing anything with my left foot/leg is still somewhat difficult.

Your dominant foot is always the back foot because when you a slowing down, you want to be able to whip that foot around to act as your break. My right foot does all the controlling basically.

But these guys we watch on TV have been training their whole lives so you can compare them to NBA players. They have a go to hand, be it right or left, but they are comfortable switching to the non dominant hand whenever they want.

      • February 18, 2010 at 12:58 am

i knew what i wanted to say but im not sure it came out the way i wanted, hopefully thats not too confusing.

      • February 18, 2010 at 1:12 am

        Makes sense to me

      • Paolo X
        February 18, 2010 at 1:27 am

Well done Franco and even more so this late at night! Can you stop by more often whenever they are snowboarding please?

      • February 18, 2010 at 1:35 am

        not a problem.

I wish Shaun white would try cross sometime. he would be the chris Johnson of snowboarders, have fun keeping up with him. but it’s clearly not daring enough for him. although he would attempt what jacobellis did in torino on that final hill and most certainly execute it

  30. February 18, 2010 at 1:18 am

Just watched Shani Davis’s Gold medal race again. Just beautiful.

    • Paolo X
      February 18, 2010 at 1:33 am

Damnit missed it again Fetch. 😦

I was watching the end of the hockey game, and now I am watching Great Britain and Sweden in women’s curling on CNBC. Wow there are three real hot MILFs between those two teams. If distractions from dudes looking sometimes like bowling alley rejects or leftovers on the men’s side don’t get more folks into this for all the wrong reasons notwithstanding various condiment stains, some of these women ought definitely do so.

Apparently some of them including the skipper for England, Lockhart, who is not particularly appealing have posed nude before! The female commenter brought that up kindly for great benefit of the male audience and got my attention, and now I have visions of yet another Olympic sport that ought have nude female competitors wearing only the requisite footwear of course.

      • February 18, 2010 at 1:37 am

Actually Paolo, Eve Muirhead is the skip for Great Britain, and she’s just 19. Easy to get them mixed up, I know.

And yeah, there is a calendar out there. Perhaps I’ll use a picture for the Gold medal match.

Lindsey Vonn is coming up soon.

  31. February 18, 2010 at 1:30 am

fetch I gotta say I clicked on the places that you write on beadlemaniacs and I’m impressed. as a fellow student to balance school work and writing for various sites on the side, with as much content as you seem to provide, thats pretty insane. kudos,

also fcardillo is me on Twitter, I know a lot of people keep the same alias on the internet but not I for some reason.

    • February 18, 2010 at 1:36 am

I figured that was you, don’t worry.

Thanks for the compliment as well. My strategy is pretty basic: Never do any more school work than you have to.

Also, nowhere here is hiring, so I’m currently unemployed other than the modest pay I get from blogging.

      • Paolo X
        February 18, 2010 at 1:53 am

Fetch your strategy has been the prudent one since at least I was out of school …I was born about 10 years too late and could have used a cell phone, internet, et cetera in high school no doubt.

Hey I have another comment in response to Franco about blogs and college in moderation probably due to length but I am not sure.

Well damn then she’s no MILF and get on her photos, preferably nude, please! Wow! But I could have sworn they said Lockhart was the skipper not Muirhead though Muirhead’s the British hottie. Lockhart is the one who posed nude.

      • February 18, 2010 at 1:59 am

Probably was length. WordPress is weird sometimes.

I looked for the calendar, but it appears it’s not for sale anymore.

    • Paolo X
      February 18, 2010 at 1:49 am

Hats off to you as well Franco in keeping up two jobs as a student like Fetch too.

I have been out of school since 1994 but myself stay a student for sake of changing careers now as I get some new licensing and take another state test. A big reason I am online a lot now is due to a job status for which I have been overqualified for some time, and at my current job I have gigabit ethernet access minus YouTube such that I will be here each night when working as well.

The skills you learn now in studying, or learning to learn, never go away like for those who want to get ahead in life. The good news no one ever told me back then is that you only get better at studying to the point where it becomes more second-nature out of experience and habit. It’s never been easier to get the relevant information either — back in the “old” days I remember sending my first e-mail in 1992 and quickly took onto it before others though am not and never was a techie or geek. Then I went to work in 1994 with a bunch of technology morons before the internet opened up for all starting in 1995 but not in most homes with reliable high-speed access until much later in 2002.

Yes Franco that is a fine site by Fetch and colleagues along with http://www.thesportshernia.com , run by “Hernia” another great guy, to which I contribute as well as on the CFL site, but few fellow Americans are interested in Canadian football too. Fetch has been kind enough to invite me at times to contribute a periodic NBA column to his basketball site too. Philly is just not an NBA town you know, and that surprised me too shortly after moving here in May 2008!

The commentary on the CFL site in the “off topic” section about new winter Olympic sports has been funny though and might be good for reference on this blog at a different time, as most of the feedback is from Canadians of course. Rather civil bunch those Canadians compared to my fellow Americans on many sites including NFL.com, where all too often it seems like folks have not much more to say other than homering their teams or parroting their local homer media — you know the kind of folks who are really into lame programming like Sports Nation or Mad Money or local sports radio at long length given far better internet alternatives and so forth.

Also Franco though not a blog site, if you are a serious NFL football fan, check http://www.gridironfans.com for the best scoops all day long instead of all the other sources reporting at random. No need to include another rant against the likes of ESPN here yet again.

      • February 18, 2010 at 2:04 am

        thanks for tips.

I read everything I can to be honest. that way it makes it easier for me to weed out the stuff that interests me from the stuff that doesn’t.

I read the sportshernia on occasion, as well as majorleaguejerk.com. gridironfans is new to me though so I will be definitely checking that out

I’m a basketball fan but right now it’s hard in Philly. if you want quaility basketball in this city you go to the palestra for the big 5 , then you watch the Philadelphia catholic league high school bball, and then if you want to watch garbage, you go to the wachovia center and watch the 76ers.

  32. February 18, 2010 at 1:47 am

I made sure to DVR tonights events. I’m gonna wanna watch that Shaun White mctwist a hundred times over, as well as the many spills during the womens downhill

    • Paolo X
      February 18, 2010 at 1:55 am

Franco check here tomorrow please for the response to your post above about blogs that I have in moderation in case you don’t see it tonight …many scoops in there for you and others.

  33. February 18, 2010 at 2:12 am

gentlemen, it’s been a pleasure as always. I’m retiring for the night.

    until tomorrow
