Day 3 Open Thread

Grand Forks, North Dakota natives Monique and Jocylene Lamoureux make their Olympic debuts today vs. China

Welcome do Day 3 of the Vancouver Games. The main attraction today is the United States women’s ice hockey team making their Vancouver debut against China. The co-gold medal favorites have a tough act to follow as their main competition from Canada won 18-0 last night. And in a story you will hear about a million times between now and the end of the games, the women are coached by Mark Johnson, who was the leading scorer on the 1980 men’s Olympic team, who stunned the world to win Gold in Lake Placid, NY.

Over on NBC, the luge competition continues, biathlon continues, and the United States makes its bid for their first ever medal in Nordic Combined. Join me after the jump and in the comments….

12:18 – The French guy who is leading the World Cup in Nordic Combined was born in America? Traitor!

12:45 – How do ski jumpers actually get onto the starting platform? I’ve always wanted to know that.

12:59 – The two Americans are in 2nd and 4th and look to have a great shot to medal.

1:04 – The Jumping portion is complete. The  favorite Jason Chappuis is in 5th.

My Medal Predictions were:

Gold – Eric Frenzel, Germany

Silver – Magnus Moan, Norway

Bronze – Jason Chappuis, France

1:15 – The deepest U.S. Biathlon team ever getting ready right now. Tim Burke leads them.

1:49 – A lot of misses by medal contenders here. With one miss in the prone shooting and two standing, Tim Burke has no shot to medal. He will have a shot in the pursuit though.

2:01 – We could have the best finish ever for the US in Biathlon. Too bad it would be 9th place.

2:04 – Vice President Joe Biden and Mike Eruzione in the house for the US Women’s debut.

2:10 – Angela Ruggiero makes it 1-0 United States with a slick move.

2:13 – Not sure why Mark Johnson doesn’t have the twins on the same line. Monique is with Jenny Potter and Hillary Knight.

2:19 – US outshooting China 8-0

2:20 – Julie Chu with a sweet pass to Kelli Stack to make it 2-0.

2:25 – China on the power play. Slashing on Monique Lamoureux

2:28 – Monique comes out of the box and makes a nice dish to Potter who makes it 3-0

2:33 – Power play goal. 4-0 USA

2:35 – Two goals in 21 seconds. 5-0 USA. Potter again.

2:55 – France’s Vincent Jay takes biathlon gold. Emil Hegle Svendsen and Jakov Fak take silver and bronze.

2:56 – Jenny Potter gets a goal to make it 6-0. Potter with a hat trick

3:00 – Gigi Marvin to Chesson to make it 7-0. Julie Chu with the other assist.

3:06 – China with a scoring chance which, of course, draws cheers from every fan in the building except the American ones.

3:11 – Erika Lawler gets run into the boards and she is limping. Looks like she should be fine with some rest. Looks painful though.

3:20 – Molly Schaus with a sweet glove save on a Chinese breakaway. Penalty on the US.

3:25 – Jocelyne Lamoureux with the goal. That was Sportscenter Top 10 Worthy.

3:44 – Nordic combined coming up. 2 Americans in the top 4, 3 in the top 10. A great chance for a watershed moment in US Skiing.

3:59 – The two Americans are 1-2 going into the last half of the nordic combined. A great great shot to win a medal.

4:01 – Brianne McLaughlin will get some time in goal for team USA. She plays for Robert Morris.

4:04 – Americans 1st, 5th and 8th in the final lap.

4:11 – And Jason Spillane wins the first ever medal for an American in Nordic Combined with a silver! Todd Lodwick misses a medal by .7 of a second, but I have a feeling he’ll get one in the team competition.

4:14 – Meanwhile, the US women’s hockey team is up 12-1 after Julie Chu scores with just under a minute left.

4:23 – Alright folks I’m going to take an official break until the primetime stuff begins. I’ll join you in the comments.

Not sexy and absolutely no spice and too whyyyte for me …

Hey Fetch for the Olympic coverage online you are the shit, but damnit did you talk to your people yet about the snow?

Where’s my downhill skiing? Man what horrible coverage on NBC today damnit!

And screw NBC/GE for running informercials on CNBC even on a Sunday! Corporate fuckers.

And how about that “senior moment” for that Meredith Vieira — talk about embarassing for herself and Americans in general geez what a ninnie.

    • February 14, 2010 at 2:42 pm

Haha, sorry Paolo. I don’t think we Norwegians have much influence on the weather in Vancouver.

Downhill skiing starts tomorrow I believe.

Damn I wish I could find the Dave Chappelle clip of the game he played regularly in 2002 as correspondent for The Tonight Show of finding the black guy amongst the largely white-out crowd.

I just spotted one dude standing around at the start of the luge of all events for my first point. Play along as well and have fun.

Perhaps some of you remember that hilarious clip and others from Chappelle from that Olympics before he hit it really big (and crashed big all the same)? It seems that NBC controls all that content and has had it removed altogether for no good reason. Some of the few good memories from that entire sorry-ass fuckin’ last decade too those fuckers!

Damn, that was a hell of a race! Who would have thought you’d get a finish like that.

      No kidding Warden.

      Appropriate comment: “France have won!”

To quote Frasier Crane, “Well that’s not something you hear very often.”

(only those about 35+ know what I am talking about sorry Fetch and damnit I could not find it on YouTube either those NBC fuckers at it again I hate NBC more ever now that greedy-ass Zuck fuck)

  7. February 14, 2010 at 4:15 pm

That cross country skiing finish was awesome. Lamy Chappuis just came out of nowhere in that last straightaway.

    • February 14, 2010 at 4:24 pm

Sadly, he is from Montana. We should have gone 1-2 in that race.

      • February 14, 2010 at 4:26 pm

        That traitorous bastard!

        /OUTRAGE!
        //USA! USA!

What the heck? I go away to run mundane errands and eat some Baja Fresh for once again and no one else contributes? Maybe waiting for Fetch’s evening edition? Slackers!
